Coimbatore: The Janta Curfew which was implemented on Mar 22, following the request of the Central and State governments. As a follow up, section 144 has been implemented by the State government, from 6 PM today (Mar 24), to Mar 31, in a bid to control the spread of Coronavirus.

People have been asked to refrain from unnecessary travel and trade. As a result of this, people have been queuing up at retail and wholesale stores, to buy essential commodities.

Usually vegetables from Ooty, Mysore and Gudalur are sent to the Mettupalayam market, from where they are distributed to various places Coimbatore and Tirupur.

Since all the farmers markets have been shutdown, procuring vegetables has become a problem for the public. As a result of this, other vegetable shops have been seeing a heavy rush of people. Tomatoes which were sold for Rs.20 are now being sold at Rs.40 per kg and brinjal at Rs.80 per kg. Curry leaves are being sold for Rs.40 to Rs.50 per bunch. In general, all the vegetables are being sold at a considerably hiked up price.

This trend has caused a lot of dissatisfaction among the people. Eventhough the government had promised that the supply of essential commodities would not be a problem, many vendors have been stocking up the vegetables, with a plan to sell it at higher prices. The public has therefore requested the government to intervene and take action, to stop this trend and make goods available, seamlessly and at nominal prices.
